Background

Richard’s early career involved enough litigation to turn him off it. Defamation proceedings in the Supreme Court. Arguing with and suing Telstra and Optus over their franchise networks. He prefers working with people when they’re exploring opportunities and growth, rather than at ten paces in the courts, armed with Counsel.

Richard lived in Melbourne for seven years and, in that time, ran his law firm which focusses on bars, restaurants, cafes and hospitality businesses. He has been recognised for his work as a finalist in National and Victorian law awards, interviews with leading industry publications and writing for The Australian on the laws in hospitality.

With a young daughter in tow, Richard returned to Perth and ran the commercial practice in one of the fastest growing firms in Australia, becoming Head of Commercial in 2019. His young son was named Tom (“my Tom”) years before he met Tom Meagher (“work Tom”).

In 2021, he joined Balfour Meagher to further complement the breadth and depth of commercial expertise.

In 2023, Richard became a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors’ Company Director Course.

Richard has been accused of being ‘disgustingly cheerful’, and you’ll find it infectious. A portrait in the attic does a lot of heavy lifting.

You can find Richard on weekends chasing his children around the park, or riding his bike, often along the coast, whilst wearing lycra.
